Announcing: My Pre-Festival Workshop at the Flash Fiction Festival at Trinity College, Bristol

Trinity College

[EDIT: This workshop sold out quickly, but spaces remain in Nuala O’Connor’s pre-festival workshop. Thanks to all who signed up! See you in June.]

I will be returning in June for the amazing Flash Fiction Festival in Bristol, England and once again, am teaching a 3 hour pre-festival workshop! Registrations for this are now open to anyone, separate from the whole weekend festival, so if you’re unable to attend for the entire weekend, you still may come just for this. Nuala O’Connor is teaching a session on Historical Flash at the same time (I wish I could clone myself so I could attend her class as well!) These workshops take place Friday, June 19th from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Here are the details of my class, which you may book separately HERE.

A Brain, a Heart, and a Home (with a Dash of Courage): Writing Flash Fiction that Soars with Kathy Fish

Do you have a cool idea for a flash, but it falls flat? Or a flash that’s rich in emotion but you can’t quite figure out what it’s about? Maybe your flash “works” on a superficial level, but you sense there’s a deeper story to be told.
Any or all of the above are what prevent good flash fiction from becoming GREAT flash fiction.
In this three-hour class, we’ll look at how to write flash that transcends the ordinary. We’ll write to fun, inspiring prompts and we’ll also do a revision exercise aimed at deepening the work. Students can expect to come away from this session with at least one new story and lots of new tools for crafting and revision. Feel free to bring an existing draft to work on as well!

During the festival, I will also be teaching two 1.5 hour sessions of Getting to the Heart of the Matter: Creating Emotion and Yearning on the Page and I will also contribute to the Saturday panel ‘Flash Point: Flashfiction as Social Commentary’ chaired by Charmaine Wilkerson. See all the scheduled workshops and events HERE.

Go HERE to sign up for the pre-festival workshop (mine or Nuala’s). I cannot recommend this festival highly enough. Last year was my first time and I had a blast. So many great teachers, workshops, panels, readings, books, and FUN! Very grateful to Jude Higgins and crew for inviting me back.

P.S. I’ve just begun reading Nuala’s historical novel, Becoming Belle, and it’s so compelling and (of course) gorgeously written.
